Why laser safety matters

Laser technology offers enormous advantages in many areas of application, but it also places special demands on safety. This guide explains the fundamental principles of laser safety and presents best practices for the safe operation of laser systems.

1.Laser Classes and Hazards

Lasers are classified into different classes according to their potential hazard. Class 1 lasers are considered safe, while Class 4 lasers represent the highest level of danger.

2.Protective Measures

Specific protective measures apply to each laser class:

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Technical protective measures
  • Organizational measures

3. Emergency Measures

In the event of a laser accident, the laser must be switched off immediately and the hazardous area secured. Affected persons should be removed from the area, and anyone with suspected eye injuries must be taken to a doctor or emergency room right away—even if no symptoms are visible. The laser safety officer should then be informed, and the incident documented. A subsequent root cause analysis ensures that future risks are minimized and safety measures are improved.
