Z-LASER’s story began in 1985 in Freiburg, Germany. Kurt-Michael Zimmermann founded an engineering office focused on industrial laser systems for positioning applications. More than 40 years later, Z-LASER GmbH is a manufacturer serving customers worldwide, with lasers spanning positioning, machine vision, and laser projection. Today, Z-LASER stands as a technology leader in industrial laser solutions, committed to innovation, quality, and responsibility made in Germany.
Company Founding and First Series Production (1985–1989)
In 1985, Kurt-Michael Zimmermann founded Z-LASER in Freiburg im Breisgau. The engineering office initially specialized in developing new solutions for gas lasers that projected cutting lines to guide lumber sawing. In the early days, the young industrial engineer personally introduced his innovative wood-cutting solutions to sawmills throughout the Black Forest region. Success came quickly: the Z5 HeNe laser, for example, which projected a red line of three to seven meters in length to guide board cutting, had already established itself on international markets from Brazil to Singapore by 1987.
In 1989, Z-LASER launched its first volume production of laser projectors for positioning applications. That same year, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer IPM, Z-LASER developed the first contactless 3D measurement system. The solution never gained widespread traction at the time, as Zimmermann himself noted: it was “ten years ahead of the world market.”

Growth, Innovation, and the Expansion into New Markets (1990–2005)
The years that followed were defined by product innovation, the opening of new markets, and the development of an international distribution network. In 1991, Z-LASER developed the Vision 2000 3D measurement system and introduced its first diode lasers. Four years later, in 1995, the company launched modular laser systems that could be flexibly deployed across a wide range of industrial applications. In 2000, Z-LASER expanded its portfolio to include laser systems for industrial machine vision. By then, the company had already established itself as a market-leading provider of laser solutions for the textile industry, tire manufacturing, concrete and prefabricated construction, as well as the medical industry.
Z-LASER also built a worldwide distribution network of more than 30 partners, further solidifying its international presence. Steady growth eventually called for a change of location: in 2005, Z-LASER moved into its new, larger headquarters on Merzhauserstraße in Freiburg. The site has remained home to the company’s main offices and production facilities to this day.

Advancing Internationalization and Sustainable Production (2005–2015)
In the following years, Z-LASER continued to advance its laser technology and further expanded its international presence. In 2008, the company established a branch office in Italy with the founding of Z-LASER Italia Srl. The location in the Milan region strengthened proximity to customers and markets across Southern Europe. Resource conservation and energy efficiency also continued to gain increasing importance, becoming foundational principles of sustainable manufacturing. In 2010, Z-LASER developed energy-efficient laser components designed to reduce resource consumption and improve energy efficiency. In 2013, new control technologies followed, enabling even more precise laser control.
A further decisive step toward solidifying the company’s quality standards came in 2015, when Z-LASER achieved certification in accordance with international quality standards such as DIN EN ISO 9001:2015. The ISO 9001 certification confirmed a structured quality management system built on clearly defined and documented processes.
Continuous Growth and New Leadership Structures (2015–2020)
Both the workforce and production volume continued to grow, prompting Z-LASER to expand its production facilities once again in 2017. In 2018, the company reached the milestone of 75,000 products sold annually for the first time. The following year, founder Kurt-Michael Zimmermann stepped down from the company’s management.
At the same time, an advisory board was established, of which Zimmermann became a member. In 2020, Z-LASER further expanded its global service and support network.

Part of the Global Exaktera Group (since 2021)
In 2021, Z-LASER became part of the Exaktera Group, a global network of specialized companies in laser and LED technologies. This integration allows Z-LASER to leverage international structures and additional technological expertise within a worldwide network, including in the field of LED technologies.
At the same time, Z-LASER remains close to customer needs and real-world applications, with development and production rooted in Freiburg. In doing so, international expertise and local know-how work in concert. Today, Z-LASER is the largest company within the Exaktera Group.
The Story of Z-LASER: Innovation, Quality, and Responsibility
The story of Z-LASER is defined by continuous technological development and a firm commitment to continuously advancing industrial laser technology with a clear focus on real-world applicability and individual customer needs. From early on, Kurt-Michael Zimmermann placed great emphasis on a strong development team and structured innovation management. As part of the Exaktera Group, Z-LASER additionally benefits from an international network and complementary technological expertise in the laser and LED space.
For more than 40 years, the laser solutions developed and manufactured by Z-LASER in Freiburg have stood for precision, innovation, customer-specific integration, efficiency, and sustainability.
